Giraglia Rolex Cup

Launched in 1953, The Giraglia Rolex Cup is one of the major events in the annual yachting calendar. Attracting the most luxurious yachts and famous crews every year, the race commences in Sanremo, Italy stopping off in Saint-Tropez for three days of competitions, before continuing to Genoa, Italy. A June event, it is open to amateur and professional sailors who compete for trophies and Rolex watches. It's quite an occasion, not only for the spectacle of the luxury yachts and the warm climate but also for the celebrity-spotting and glamorous location.

Cowes Week, Isle of Wight

Cowes Week, Isle of Wight

One of the most famous and important summer yachting events, Cowes Week regularly attracts more than 100,000 spectators and is the biggest yachting regatta in the world. It takes place annually in late July to early August and boasts around 1,000 competing boats and an amazing 40 races each day. It's not only the sailing that attracts the crowds - there are also parties, firework displays, plenty of entertainment, great shopping locations, top restaurants and sightseeing. It makes the perfect family holiday.

Sydney Hobart Yacht Race

The annual race has been taking place for more than 70 years, attracting around 100 competing yachts. It is legendary for its spectacular Boxing Day start and its 4,000-boat spectator fleet - a sight everyone should witness! It's an icon of Australian summer sport - bearing in mind it's summer during Christmas in Australia - and no other yachting event has received such massive media coverage as the stunning launch at Sydney Harbour. Hobart Race Village is in full swing for the duration with live music, gaming screens, food and drink stalls with every type of food, interactive information and something for all the family. There's also a spectacular fireworks festival on New Year's Eve.

Superyacht Cup, Palma

The weather in Mallorca is ideal for yachting… and spectating! Against a breathtaking backdrop of stunning coastline, the region exudes picture-postcard beauty. One of yachting's newest competitions (it began in 2006), it has quickly gained in popularity on the racing circuit. Taking place in June every year, the Superyacht Cup features three days of racing, with some of the world's most luxurious yachts competing for the prize. There are plenty of world-class hotels and restaurants, while the entertainment includes a disco-themed dock party, live music and DJs that create a lively party atmosphere.

America's Cup

One of the yachting world's oldest and most sought-after trophies, the America's Cup began in 1851 with a race around the Isle of Wight, organised by the Royal Yacht Squadron. Today, it has grown into a major annual yachting spectacle, attracting the world's top sailors and yacht designers for a test of human endeavour and craft design. Taking place in July each year, it attracts thousands of tourists who are swept along by the atmosphere. The event takes place at a number of locations across the world (the venues rotate) such as Bermuda, San Francisco, Spain, Sweden and New Zealand, with preliminary races leading up to the grand finale.

Cannes Yachting Festival

The rich and famous congregate at the annual Cannes Yachting Festival, so expect to rub shoulders with the stars should you be lucky enough to attend. On a par with Cannes Film Festival in terms of glamour and spectacle, the yachting festival features more than 500 boats on display in two ports, including many world premieres of new vessels. Potential buyers are invited to take the yachts for a test drive in the warm, clear Mediterranean Sea. Taking place every September, there's a special helicopter shuttle ride from Nice to whisk participants there in seven minutes!
