Johnny Depp: The Collector

One of the oddest pieces of news to come out of Hollywood is the revelation that A-list movie star and celebrity Johnny Depp collects dolls.

Famous for his role as dashing pirate Captain Jack Sparrow in the box office smash Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Depp has revealed he has a large collection of limited edition Barbie dolls.

The famous brand was invented in 1959 by American wife and mother Ruth Handler to entertain her own daughter, Barbara. After patenting her idea of a 3D, fashionable teenage doll, Handler's creation made its debut at New York Toy Fair. It soon went into mass production with toy giant Mattel and the rest, as they say, is history.

Early and rare Barbie’s can command thousands of pounds at auction. The most expensive Barbie ever sold went for an astounding $302,500 at auction! It wasn't your run-of-the-mill doll, however - it was a one-off creation, designed by Australian jeweller Stefano Canturi and wearing doll jewellery dripping in white and pink diamonds.

Depp's dolls

Depp, aged 54, is best known for his onscreen creation of Jack Sparrow, who first appeared on the big screen in 2003 in the fantasy pirate film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. He is also famous for a host of other roles in massive box office hits - including Edward Scissorhands in 1990, Sleepy Hollow in 1999 and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 2005.

The award-winning actor received the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his leading role in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in 2007 and the Screen Actors' Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a leading male actor in The Curse of the Black Pearl.

He likes to spend his spare time collecting all kinds of memorabilia, and his limited-edition Barbies are just a small part of many collections at his Los Angeles home. He collects celebrity dolls in general, rather than just Barbies, including dolls depicting Destiny's Child, Beyoncé, New Kids on the Block, High School Musical and older ones such as Donny Osmond and Elvis Presley.

He buys the relevant accessories for the dolls to reflect the latest show business news. Perhaps his most bizarre doll is a Lindsay Lohan one, with an ankle monitoring tag reflecting the time she was under house arrest!

Other collections

Apart from his doll hoard, Depp is interested in many other items and has a massive art collection. He is said to have spent millions of dollars on around 200 works of art, including paintings by the likes of Andy Warhol and Amedeo Modigliani. It was reported that the star bought three Leonor Fini paintings from a Manhattan gallery on the spur of the moment, with one alone costing him $245,000.

He also has a massive collection of Hollywood memorabilia which has reportedly cost him millions of dollars too. His collection pays tribute to the great Hollywood legends of bygone days and he has bought plenty of their old items. To accommodate his massive collection, it is said that he has taken up 12 storage facilities!

Depp has been described as the "world's most organised hoarder" after spending another million dollars having his collection archived.
